It’s that time again when people everywhere descend into feverish debate about their favourite films from the last 12 months because the 90th Oscar nominations have been announced.

Yesterday the eagerly anticipated shortlists of the calendar’s most triumphant movies were revealed and here at Angell Sound our attention always goes to the sound and music categories first. This year did not disappoint with the quality of audio craftsmanship in contention to win a famous golden statuette.

The Original Score is the most hotly contested category and this year it offers incredible musical variety. Hans Zimmer was at the very top of his game with his relentlessly intense backdrop to the Nolan’s vision for the Dunkirk evacuation. However, Alexandre Desplat’s score mixes romance with mysticism to great effect in “The Shape Of Water”, while Carter Burwell manages to balance epic emotions with the local textures of Missouri in “Three Billboards…”

The Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories provide us with different forms of escapism. Whether it is the high-octane musical “Baby Driver”, the newly imagined dystopian future of “Blade Runner 2049” or the monstrous world of “The Shape Of Water”, the sound plays such an important role in making these fictitious places feel real. We are also thrilled that Star Wars appears in three of these categories and continues its legacy of pushing the boundaries of audio on film. We can’t wait to find out who wins.

Below are the nominees for the sound and music categories. Who are you tipping to win?
